Kindergarten self-portraits

 

 

This is the first time many of these children have made a self-portrait.  I love them!

After drawing them, they went over them with a sharpie.  They rubbed pastels into them and thenwe found some pastel pencils in case we needed another detail.

3rd and 5th grades enjoyed grid drawings.

   It is a way to transpose a drawing from one paper to another or make it larger or smaller.  We use scale; 1:1 or 1:20.  It improves drawing and observational skills.  It’s also a way to help us understand graphing with a horizontal (x) and vertical (y) axis.  It’s interesting that some students love this activity while others don’t, reminding us that we are all different.

 

 

The dragon....

first we transposed an iguana from one grid to another at 1:1.  Then we decided to enlarge it.  The kids wanted it really big so it ended by being 10 times bigger than the original.

Mr. Wells class worked on a fantastic image of turtles in the surf.

Electric Sewing
a 4th grade wonder

Learning to tread a needle and stitch.

Sewing buttons is a life long learning skill.



 After painting, stitching and stuffing, we had two of each

 

The students and Ms. McGill stitched these planets onto a black background

and then sewed stars on with electric thread.

 

With the battery in and turned on, the stars light up.

Self-portraits

 

 

Most classes work on self-portraits during the year.

Here are some 2nd grade portraits made to be send around the world, Flat Stanley style.

 

 

3rd graders are making self-portraits to be displayed with personal narratives.

 

 

After working on self-portraits, kindergartners made scarecrows.

 

 



 

Doodles and Zentangles

 

 

The students love making tangles and doodles. 

 If you walk into the art room and it is totally silent, we're focused on doodling.  

 

Grades 3, 4 and 5 have started the year with black fine pointed sharpies and white paper.

We all love drawing these doodles as it is creative and meditative.

 

Mrs. McGill's class wrote and illustrated a classbook, Zenned Inside and Out, which they sent electronically to Mr. Matt's class in Malasyia.

We talked about doodling any place, anytime, any paper, and any pencil.
