3rd grade African Trading beads

As part of a unit on Mali, we made these beads.  Years ago when Europeans first went to Africa, they traded glass millifore beads for salt and gold.  African children are given beads as part of a naming ceremony to wear all their lives.  Beads are very important to them even now, as they are passed down from generation to generation.

Second graders studying MC Escher and tesselations came up with this poem.
