Shoe Print Mural

Students LOVE to work in clay.  This was a very exciting project for them.  They told me days and weeks later, how much they liked it.  Every student and every adult in our school community made a 2 inch tile to contribute to the all-school project.
I loved when I said, "Watch what I do for the next step."  And then when I proceeded to take off my shoe, their faces were wide-eyed.   The idea of pressing their shoe into clay for a pattern was almost more than they could handle.

Our shoe print mural was made with the help of every person in our school community.
There are shoe prints from students, teachers, staff, volunteers and even Mr. Johnson.
Here are the steps:
1.     roll out the clay
2.     take off your shoe and press it into the clay
3.     cut it into a square and paint it
4.     fire it in the kiln to 1800 degrees
5.     get plywood and cut it to shape
6.     glue tiles on
7.     grout in between tiles
8.     clean tiles

One student commented, “Art is really hard work!”
“I’m tired but I have to keep working.”
“We all worked on this together.”
“Art has a lot of math.”

Self-portraits

Self-portraits are always so much fun.  One student today said, "We did this last year.  Why are we doing it again?  Oh wait, is it because we grew?"
As a mother, I always wished my kids would've come home with self-portraits every year.  Kindergarten and 1st grade have been working on these recently.

China

Second graders are studying China and we thought it would be great to paint a canvas.

Students planned their canvases by looking at blue and white porcelain pottery, flower arranging and Chinese images.  Here are planning sheets.

Students first painted the background color after blocking off the pot area.
