Shoe Print Mural

Students LOVE to work in clay.  This was a very exciting project for them.  They told me days and weeks later, how much they liked it.  Every student and every adult in our school community made a 2 inch tile to contribute to the all-school project.
I loved when I said, "Watch what I do for the next step."  And then when I proceeded to take off my shoe, their faces were wide-eyed.   The idea of pressing their shoe into clay for a pattern was almost more than they could handle.

Our shoe print mural was made with the help of every person in our school community.
There are shoe prints from students, teachers, staff, volunteers and even Mr. Johnson.
Here are the steps:
1.     roll out the clay
2.     take off your shoe and press it into the clay
3.     cut it into a square and paint it
4.     fire it in the kiln to 1800 degrees
5.     get plywood and cut it to shape
6.     glue tiles on
7.     grout in between tiles
8.     clean tiles

One student commented, “Art is really hard work!”
“I’m tired but I have to keep working.”
“We all worked on this together.”
“Art has a lot of math.”
